Ron Dante is one of pop music’s most fascinating behind-the-scenes figures — the real voice behind some of the era’s biggest hits. Born Carmine Granito in Staten Island, New York, Dante became the lead vocalist of the fictional cartoon band The Archies in 1968, giving voice to the #1 song of 1969: “Sugar, Sugar.” The track sold over six million copies and topped the charts in both the US and the UK — all without the public knowing his name. At the same time, he simultaneously had another Top 10 hit as the lead singer of The Cuff Links with “Tracy.” Behind the scenes, Dante went on to co-produce Barry Manilow’s first nine albums, helping craft 18 Top 10 singles including “Mandy,” “Copacabana,” and “Could It Be Magic.” He also produced the original Broadway cast recording of Ain’t Misbehavin’. On the Happy Together Tour, Dante performs the Archies’ biggest hits and leads the tour’s signature closing anthem, “Happy Together,” as the voice of The Turtles.
