Minneapolis hip-hop duo — rapper Slug (Sean Daley) and producer Ant (Anthony Davis) — who helped build and define the independent rap landscape from the mid-90s forward. Co-founders of Rhymesayers Entertainment, their debut Overcast! (1997) laid the groundwork, while Lucy Ford (2001) and God Loves Ugly (2002) built their devoted following. When Life Gives You Lemons (2008) hit #5 on the Billboard 200, and Slug’s confessional, character-driven style earned the pair early credit (and a measure of ribbing) for coining the phrase “emo rap.” Over 13+ studio albums, they’ve remained the backbone of Rhymesayers and the soul of Minneapolis hip-hop. Their latest, So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously (2023), is among their most introspective work.
