Gary Puckett is one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from the late 1960s pop scene. Born in Hibbing, Minnesota — the same small town that produced Bob Dylan — Puckett grew up in Washington state and eventually formed Gary Puckett & the Union Gap in San Diego in 1967. The band, known for their eye-catching Civil War-era Union Army uniforms, signed with Columbia Records and promptly became one of the biggest acts in the country. In 1968 alone, they notched six consecutive gold records and sold more records than any other act — including the Beatles. Their hits “Young Girl,” “Woman, Woman,” “Lady Willpower,” “Over You,” and “This Girl Is a Woman Now” remain staples of classic radio. The band was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1969 and performed on The Ed Sullivan Show twice. Puckett has been a beloved fixture on the Happy Together Tour for years, and his powerful signature tenor voice remains as commanding as ever.
